Snippets for Solo Clarinet (2011) 5
minutes
Commissioned by Network for New Music
"A small piece" is how Webster's Dictionary defines snippet. Since only five
minutes are required to perform the three movements of this composition, the title
Snippets seems a natural fit. The first movement, Quick and Quirky, is a flirtation
with jazz-tinged riffs, both rhythmic and melodic. In the second movement, Slow
and Serious, quiet sorrow alternates with shrill agitation. The concluding
movement, Fast and Frisky, is a madcap tarantella with a familiar little quip in
the final three bars. In all three movements, the composer enjoys exploiting the
clarinet's three distinct registers (low, high, and piercingly high), as well as its unparalleled ability to play softly.
