Newborn Snow (2003) Three-part Treble (SSA) and
Piano 5 minutes
Published by Lorenz (Roger Dean Division)
Here is a review
from the Fall 2005 edition of Choral
Newsletter: "This is
a stunning piece of music and is perfect for a winter concert.
The opening
unison on a sensitive text by the composer is chillingly
beautiful. The
harmonic writing is fresh and accessible. The piano accompaniment
imitates
the snow falling. The music on the text 'the path shines
bright amid the
night' is sumptuous in tone, alternating between unison
and beautiful
harmony. The quiet ending on changing meters reflects
the vocal beauty of
a fresh snow storm."

to listen to a lovely performance of this music. But
please note that this performance does not utilize the
current text; the
composer originally used Robert Frost's "Stopping
by Woods on a Snowy
Evening" as a text, but was not given permission to
publish in that form.
Here are the new words, written by the composer:
I stood alone beneath the glow,
From moon and stars the light did flow.
Around me gently soft and white,
Fell quiet flakes of newborn snow.
The cold grew gray, the woods drew dark,
I lost my way without a mark.
No path was seen, no road was found,
O frozen heart, where sings the lark?
A child I was though years have passed.
A child I'm still and hope to last:
The path shines bright amid the night,
To one whose eyes are childlike cast.
I stand alone beneath the glow,
From moon and stars the light does flow.
Around me gently soft and white,
Fall quiet flakes of newborn snow.
